Christmas welcome in Downing Street
for Russian girl with Down syndrome

On 15th of December 2004 - the most famous front-door in the world was opened to welcome a child from the Russian Federation.

Dasha Mukhanova who has Down syndrome and her mother were invited by Cherie Booth QC to a children's Christmas party in Downing Street, 10 in support of the British-Russian charity Downside Up [DSU].

In Russia, there is still little access to the social, educational and developmental support for families coping with Down syndrome.

Welcoming the families, Cherie Booth QC said:

"Downside Up is unique. As well as guaranteeing these children a right to education and a normal family life, the charity is currently changing the minds of a whole generation of Russian doctors about disability."

Anna Portugalova who manages DSU's Early Intervention Centre in Moscow said:

"After several private visits to our Moscow centre, Mrs Blair has generously invited our children into her famous home. Such a high-profile and prestigious invitation means the world to us and the hundreds of families we support in Russia."

This trip was only made possible thanks to the support from Aeroflot which provided free tickets, and the British Embassy in Moscow.
