On
24th August 2006, over 91 participants took up the challenge
of the 11th annual charity Red Square Bike Ride, to help raise
money for children with Down syndrome. This event has been the
most successful bike ride in Downside Up history, raising over
$140,000!
This
year a record number of 12 corporate teams gathered at
Dinamo metro station awaiting transport to the hotel. Immediately,
thanks to organisers, the coach soon turned into a party-bus,
setting the tone for the whole event.
Over
the course of the next 2 days participants rode 166 km
and competed in a variety of forest competitions. As competitors
were asked to gently make their way over to the start, it was
clear there was no lack of competitive spirit as even THIS turned
into a race. From obstacle courses to special race stages there
was something for everyone. While most of the ladies were clearly
delighted to seek help from the very ‘athletic’ guys from the
support group (yes ETSN, we
saw you!), Western Union and
their whistles were breaking records for the noisiest team…Remco,
you will remember this bike ride, last seen flying through the
air on the way to prize for best fall.
The
party on the final night, kindly sponsored by Voerman
saw fireworks, DJ’s, and A LOT of dancing (we will all remember
HSBC’s moves)! After 30 very
imaginative toasts, led by Reinoud , the party was in full flow.
Johnson & Johnson, next
year you will not be allowed to shirk your dance penalty!
The
highlight being the touching words of Zinaida, the mother
of Andrei Vostrikov, Russian national champion in gymnastics
among the children with disabilities…
So it was fitting that Andrei Vostrikov himself let us to
Red Square for the finishing line in his second such event.
Western Union took the overall title (we hope
that Trophy is looking good in the office!) and to be greeted by
so many news-crews and children from the Downside Up were
a timely reminder of why this event is so important for raising
money and awareness for a great cause.
The
second place was taken by Shell
The third place - PPE The title mr Red Square Bike Ride 2006 was
awarded to Andrey Vostrikov.
The fastest woman - Irina Ganayeva from Shell
The fastest man - Tjeerd de Jong, a teacher from a school
of journalism from Holland
