On August 28th at noon, the 10th Charity Red Square Bike Ride to benefit children with Down syndrome finished in Red Square. This annual event is held in order to raise funds for rehabilitation programmes for children with Down syndrome and to attract public attention to the issues of integration of children with Down syndrome into society. 80 participants from different countries including Russia, Great Britain, the USA, France, Germany, the Netherlands, South Africa and Canada toot part in the aniversary ride. Each of the participants and sponsoring companies made a charitable contribution towards rehabilitation programmes for children with Down syndrome carried out in Moscow by Russian-British Charitable Fund Downside Up.

Today over 600 families from 45 regions of Russia participate in the Fund's programmes. Thanks to the efforts of the sponsors several families from the regions came to Moscow to participate in the closing ceremony of the Bike Ride.

For the participants this 160km bicycle ride in the Ruza district of the Moscow region with the triumphant finish in Red Square to the sounds of military orchestra will also be remembered for forging through the bushes and crossing a stream, team competitions and celebratory fireworks on the last day. But the most touching moment was meeting the families they are helping, and children with Down syndrome. Adults could not help applauding the young 4-6 year old cyclists who did a short ride in Vasilyevsky Spusk and then grateful parents and children presented the medals to all the participants and joint photographs were taken.

Andrey Malakhov, a famous TV presenter who devoted one of his programmes "Pyat' Vecherov" to Down syndrome did the final section of the Ride to Vasilyevsky Spusk together with all the participants.

This year for the first time Andrei Vostrikov, an 18 year old man with Down syndrome took part in the Bike Ride. Andrey is a national gymnastics champion among children with intellectual and physical disabilities, a prize-winner of several national championships and a member of the Russian national team at the European Championship 2006 that will be held in Italy. Along with others Andrey did all the route easily outriding many and many of the participants.

As a result of the anniversary ride, thanks to the active support of the business community, Moscow Public Relations Committee, Youth and Sports Comission of the Senate of the Russian Federation, Russian Cycling Federation the Downside Up Fund has raised about 3 million roubles. In 2005-2006 hundreds of Russian children with Down syndrome will receive specialist support.
